An ISO image is an optical disc image. ISO files are images of complete CDs compiled as one whole page. To create CDs the images are loaded into various CD recording software packages. ISO recorder installs this program automatically associated with file extension ISO in windows explorer. The steps followed to create CDs from an installed ISO recorder are downloading the CD image to a folder in the computer, inserting a blank CD into the CD-RW drive, starting windows explorer, locating the ISO file to write images on the CD.
ISO burned copies are used to duplicate entire CD/DVDs in their original folder structure without damaging individual files. When in the disc image format the files contain duplicates of data on a disc for copying data saved on it and on the file system information with directory structures, file attributes as well as boot code. The header information is never lost in the process and file extension ISO is used in the restoration of a disc exactly to its original version. The files are opened by windows powerISO, winISO etc.
